Bio

theskyisthinaspaperhere is the work of Marcus Dyer, a Bristol-based composer, sound engineer and digital artist, whose genre-defying work frequently relies on collaborating with a wide variety of artists.

After studying Sound Technology at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Marcus started out in music production, working with an eclectic range of musicians including Matt Elliott (Domino Records / Ici DʼAilleurs) and Manyfingers (Ici DʼAilleurs). The latter drew attention from Joseph Stannard writing for The Wire: Adventures in Modern Music, praising Manyfingers album ‘The Spectacular Nowhere’ for its: “smartly orchestrated noise… chamber-like arrangements, the degree of detail to the sound”.

Today, Marcusʼ work encompasses a wide range of disciplines from live coding and composition to AV installations and experiments in virtual reality. As a musician who has embraced tools for generating and layering electronic sounds rather than conventional instruments, Marcus has built custom software to both compose and perform.

As a live sound engineer, Marcus can often be found working in many of Bristol’s much loved Bristol music venues including The Lanes, The Canteen, Crofters, Hy Brasil and Old Market Assembly, having mixed sound for hundreds of both touring and local acts over the years. Show highlights to date have included: The Cactus Blossoms, James Chance and Die Contortions, Comet is Coming, Dele Sosimi and Kælan Mikla.

Projects & Commissions showcases Marcus’ production, composition, installation and creative coding work. If you have a project for which these skills are a good match or would like to book theskyisthinaspaperhere for a performance, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
